Problems of the middle ear, presenting with conductive or mixed hearing loss, are generally due to a hole in the eardrum, discharge from the middle ear and mastoid bone, bone erosion in the middle ear bone chain (ossicular chain), fixation of joints or thickening of bone, and collection of fluid behind the eardrum following a cold. Very rarely, it can be due to tumors of the nerve and blood vessels (neuroma and glomus, respectively). Except in a few situations, the majority will require surgical treatment to provide a dry ear, improve hearing, and remove the tumor. Surgeries can vary from simple daycare procedures like myringotomy grommet insertion, stapedotomy, ossiculoplasty, various types of tympanoplasty, mastoidectomy, facial nerve decompression, and removal of glomus tympanum/jugulare.
